The Eye Center is excited to announce the addition of the latest technology in glaucoma treatment, The Kahook Dual Blade® (KDB)! KDB is a high-tech, single-use ophthalmic blade used to treat glaucoma with a procedure called goniotomy, which is typically at the time of cataract surgery. (The KDB may also be used to perform goniotomy as a stand-alone procedure.)
Goniotomy is a proven procedure in which the diseased tissue blocking fluid from flowing out of the eye is removed. It has been safely performed for decades on men, women and children, and over the years, technology has advanced and new instruments, such as the KDB have been developed to help reduce risks and improve post-op recovery.
Goniotomy with the Kahook Dual Blade is quick and painless outpatient procedure, with a low risk of leaks or infections and no need for sutures. Patients also experience quicker recovery when compared with other glaucoma treatment options.

What to Expect During the Procedure
The Kahook Dual Blade® is intricately designed to allow eye surgeons to effectively treat glaucoma by releasing intraocular pressure (IOP) with targeted, precise incisions. The groundbreaking, micro-engineered steel body is specifically designed to produce targeted, fine-tuned incisions for an effective glaucoma treatment.
The innovative and groundbreaking Kahook Dual Blade® consists of several components, including:
- Surgical-grade stainless steel with a sharp tip for painless incision
- Long, narrow shaft to allow for seamless access to the anterior chamber
- Dual blades for simultaneous incisions to the affected tissue
- Ramp technology stretches and lifts the eye tissue for accurate positioning of the device
- Foot plate to create smooth motion and prevent tissue damage in the anterior wall of the canal
Glaucoma is an eye disease that, if left untreated, could result in permanent damage to your vision, or even blindness. Contact us for more information about the KDB and our life-changing services. To schedule an appointment, you may call 803-256-0641.
