Dr. Matthew Clary is a board certified ophthalmologist who specializes in cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange (Panoptix, Vivity, Symfony, and Toric lens for astigmatism), refractive surgery (AST, Epi-Lasik, and PTK), glaucoma (SLT, istent, Hydrus, Durysta, Kahook, and Omni), and routine eye exams. He has performed over 12,000 cataract surgeries for patients in the Midlands. Dr. Clary cares for medical retina patients through monitoring of disease (diabetes, macular degeneration), use of lasers, and injections of medications such as Avastin. Dr. Clary strives to provide an individualized approach to care by matching his patient’s visual needs with the best technology available.
Currently serving as Chairman of Ophthalmology for Providence Hospital in Columbia, Dr. Clary completed his Ophthalmology Residency at Texas A&M University/Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. He graduated with the highest number of cataract surgeries ever performed by a resident in the program’s history. Dr. Clary graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2004. He received his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of South Carolina Honors College, graduating magna cum laude, in 2000. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1999. A native of Columbia, he graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1996. Dr. Clary joined The Eye Center in 2008. A member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons, Dr. Clary has previously served on the national board of The Christian Ophthalmology Society.
Dr. Clary enjoys spending time with his family, playing guitar, teaching shag dance lessons, and all types of sports.
